Inexpensive gift ideas
Inexpensive gift ideas for saving money on gifts for the holidays.
Almost everyone loves the holiday season. Meeting with family and friends, the food and of course, presents. For those on a small budget, buying presents for family and friends around the holidays can be expensive and stressful. But there are ways to keep to your budget and find something for everyone on your list.
A great way to save money is to create a personal package for each person on your gift list. You can use a funny picture of yourself and the family pets for example. Incorporate it into a greeting card or put it into a frame. Include a personal note, wrap it and ship it out. This type of gift will probably cost less than $10, but because of its individuality it is worth much more to the people who will receive it.
In addition to the framed picture and personal card, you could add some freshly baked goods. Make a batch of your best cookies and include them in the package you send to the people on your gift list. This is another item which is low cost but high value.
If you have a friend or relative who likes antiques or collectibles, try going to thrift stores and flea markets. You can always find a wide assortment of unique items at such places. What may look like junk to you could be the perfect gift for that collector on your list.
The great part about shopping at thrift stores and flea markets is the bargaining. You can always try to haggle your way to a better price on desired items. A word of warning, make sure whatever you buy is in working order. A lot of these places will not take returns and the items you buy will most likely not have any guarantees.
If you absolutely must go to a “real” store to get presents for those on your holiday present list, you can still save money. To accomplish this, you’ll need to follow several steps.
Start off by making a detailed list of what types of items you’re looking for and how much you’re willing to spend. This is a good way to keep your shopping and spending in perspective. Sometimes seeing what you need and what you have to spend on paper can limit those expensive impulse buys.
Don’t wait until the last minute to start looking for gifts. If you start early you can catch some of the best sales at department stores. Often, a store’s holiday sale isn’t as good as the sales they have in September and October. Shopping is also much easier and less stressful if done early.
Another method is to comparison shop. If you see an item at one store, don’t assume that this will be the lowest price. Check around at similar stores and discount stores for the same item. Although this will take some time you will most likely end up getting the best price.
Don’t shy away from going to discount stores either. They often have quality name brand products that are cheaper than the same items found in the large department stores. Often it takes a little more work and patience to find quality items at these stores, but it is worth the extra effort.
Staying on budget during the holiday season can be difficult. But for those who need to save money, following a plan and being resourceful can make holiday shopping rewarding and less costly.
